Personality:
Kaname isn't very good at dealing with people. Due to the things he grew up hearing and seeing because of the youkai (essentially, Japanese spirits and monsters), he had a hard time connecting with other children his age. In the first season, Kitamoto compares him to Natsume, saying how they both like being alone and have a tendency to "suddenly become uneasy as if seeing something scary." This has led to Kaname becoming very independent, having spent most of his free-time by himself. Much of this also stems from his home life, where he lives alone with his father, a Buddhist priest. He doesn't want his father to worry about him, and as a result, he doesn't tell his father about everything he can see and hear. Kaname is also careful not to do things that are rash or dangerous, because he knows putting himself at risk would bring trouble to his father and their home.

However, there are times when Kaname will do something dangerous without thinking. In episode 11 of the third season, Kaname jumps in front of Natsume to protect him from something that had been rustling in the bushes and heading towards them. Although initially believing it to have been a strange gust of wind, it later turns out to have been a youkai that was trying to possess Natsume. When the youkai possesses Kaname instead, he chooses not to tell Natsume about it and instead makes a point to avoid him during school in the hopes of not getting him involved. This is because Kaname doesn't want to do anything that might cause his friends unnecessary grief, even knowing that withholding information may only make things worse in the end.

Overall, Natsume has served as a major catalyst of change in Kaname throughout the series. No longer does he spend all his time alone, instead often hanging around Natsume and Taki, the only two other people in their school who know about the world of youkai. He's also seen becoming more included in school gathers along with Kitamoto and Nishimura as the series progresses, mostly due to Natsume's influence. Despite these changes, Kaname still isn't very good at being social and has a tendency to keep quiet and go with the flow of things. Prior to speaking with Natsume for the first time, Kaname had asked a few of his friends about him, but never set out to try and speak with him himself. In the end, it was Natsume who eventually approached Kaname first.

Although Kaname and Natsume are friends, he worries that his weak ability will only be a burden to him. Earlier, in episode 13 of the second season, Kaname helps Natsume by finding the location of an old well where a powerful and evil youkai is sealed. Though initially Natsume had only asked Taki for help, she runs into Kaname and he lends a hand, but only after asking her not to tell Natsume that he was the one to find the well. He is all too aware of the fact that he and Natsume are a lot alike, and knows that Natsume is hesitant to ask for help even when he really needs it.

Strengths:
1. As stated previously, Kaname is very sensitive to supernatural beings such as youkai or spirits. He's able to see shadows and reflections, and sometimes even hear their voices. He's also able to sense when something strong is nearby, and can pinpoint which direction it is coming from (as seen in the fourth season when he is following the trail of a youkai that kidnapped Natsume).
2. Kaname is very intelligent. He's a fairly skilled Shogi player and gets good grades in school, despite being absent so often while growing up.
3. Kaname has an athletic build and is very fit, despite his tendency for falling ill due to how sensitive he is to the youkai and spirits around him.
4. Though never stated as fact, it's likely he underwent some kind of martial arts training as a boy to occupy his time and keep fit. This is supported both by multiple drawings by the author of a young Kaname wearing a training uniform, and by the fact that he doesn't hesitate to jump in the line of fire when someone is in danger (such as in episode 10 of season 3 when he is possessed by a youkai that had been targeting Natsume).

Weaknesses:
1. Due to the nature of his ability, he's prone to getting headaches and falling ill if exposed to evil or vengeful spirits. Despite this sensitivity, he's still unable to see them clearly beyond shadows or reflections.
2. He has problems connecting with people due to his independent nature, and he doesn't always know how to act in social situations. At one point in the series, he even tells Natsume that there was something he had wanted to talk to him about, but because he didn't know how to say it, he didn't say anything.
3. Outside of his ability, Kaname is very much just a normal Japanese high school student.

First Person: Q&A since he's kind of quiet!

Third Person:
Something was wrong. Something was very wrong. At first, Kaname thought that perhaps he was just dreaming. After all, he didn't exactly make a habit of sleeping outside. Certainly not shirtless. And he's certainly never had wings before. Compared to some of the things he's dreamed about, this was actually kind of pleasant. Nothing lurking in the shadows, no voices coming from seemingly nowhere...

The wind picks up and he feels a chill run across his body. A chill? Did people shiver in their dreams...?

Sitting up with a gasp, it occurs to him all too quickly that he's awake. His mind is clear, the air feels cold, and there's a nagging ache in his back where those wings are that just wouldn't make sense, even if he was somehow straining his back in his sleep. The wings hurt... they were real... he had wings.

No longer sitting calmly on the ground, Kaname jumped to his feet and reached behind him frantically, trying at first to see if there were indeed a part of him, or something just stuck to his back. It only took a few touches for it to sink in that yes, he can feel them when they're touched. And they're sore. This wasn't a dream.

But was it a youkai's doing? He could see them. They were there, so clearly in front of him... but perhaps that was only because they had become a part of him? He didn't really know enough about youkai to be able to determine otherwise. And even if this was the doing a youkai, and he was now fitted with wings and in some unknown location without nothing but a pair of pants... now what was he supposed to do?
